Some of the GOP electors in Michigan were local activists who were recruited to serve as “fake electors,” all while inaccurately believing there was still a chance that then-President Donald Trump might secure a second consecutive term. CNN has reached out to the 16 fake electors for comment about the criminal charges. Here’s what we know about the 16 fake electors facing state charges. Meshawn Maddock, 55, was co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party during the 2020 campaign and is married to a GOP member of the Michigan House of Representatives. James Renner, 76, was also brought in later in the process to replace one of the original GOP electors.

The real question is how long will UAW workers stay off the job, said Mark Wakefield, co-head of AlixPartners' automotive practice. Around 1,680 union workers company-wide agreed to take the buyout, according to a union representative. He opted for a voluntary transfer to a Stellantis plant in Toledo, Ohio. Illinois Governor J.B. Electric cars are less profitable for automakers than gas-powered ones. There's a simple reason why: EVs aren't very profitable for automakers — and certainly nowhere near how profitable gas-powered cars. Subscriptions and additional offerings post-initial transactions are part of why automakers are especially interested in leasing their EVs. So major changes are in store as automakers navigate shifting consumer behaviors, industry headwinds, and especially, increasingly attractive competition. "This looming threat adds pressure on the traditional dealer model and threatens to impact the bottom line," the report says.

"They were NOT wearing this sweatshirt design. According to the Detroit Free Press, the original sweatshirt design was that of MSU donor recognition coordinator Andersen Herminia Boyer, who made sweatshirts for herself and other members of her alumni group. "Unscrupulous businesses and individuals have engaged in selling unlicensed apparel and other merchandise.

New York CNN —Workers at the Ultium Cells plant, co-owned by General Motors and Korean giant LG, voted overwhelmingly this week to join the United Auto Workers union. Like Ultium most of those battery plants are joint ventures with battery makers rather than wholly owned by the automakers themselves. That means the workers at those new plants will not be part of the UAW unless they vote to join. So it’s crucial for the UAW to be able to organize these slew of joint venture battery plants popping up nationwide. While GM (GM) is not the sole owner of the plant, its executives welcomed the union in hopes it helps to maintain labor peace with contract talks looming next fall.
Michigan is poised to become a safe haven of constitutionally protected abortion rights in the Midwest, where access is shrinking. Democrats have made abortion rights central to their campaign to maintain control of Congress and expand their majorities in the midterms. This means reinstating abortion rights at the federal level is unlikely in the near term. Kansas, which is also a very conservative state, resoundingly rejected a ballot measure in August that would have stripped abortion rights from its state constitution. MichiganIn Michigan, voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution to protect not just abortion but reproductive rights broadly.
On May 18 that year, Jones said, Zahra drove her to the clinic and paid for her abortion. Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian Zahra. Michigan CourtsAside from Zahra, Jones said she did not immediately tell anyone that she was pregnant in May 1983. The abortion-rights coalition sued to place it on the ballot, and the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the coalition — ordering state officials to put the proposed amendment to voters on Nov. 8. She calculated her menstrual cycle and told Zahra she thought she might be pregnant.
The mother of a young Detroit man shot more than a dozen times by police during a mental health crisis filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city and five unidentified officers. Burks' brother informed officers that the 20-year-old was in the midst of a mental health crisis and only had a pocketknife on him, the lawsuit said. "The Department will continue to advocate for greater resources for the mental health community and will take every opportunity to improve its response to people suffering from mental illness," he said. "We firmly believe that if appropriate mental health facilities and treatment plans had been available, this situation may have been avoided. Regrettably, the DPD remains the primary emergency response service for individuals suffering from mental health emergencies."
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney has endorsed Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin for reelection. Cheney has crossed party lines because Slotkin challenger Tom Barrett is a 2020 election denier. A Jan. 6 committee leader, Cheney has resolved "to make sure those people don't get elected." Slotkin, a two-term lawmaker, is facing off against Barrett, a Michigan state senator, this November. Barrett brushed off the endorsement as grandstanding by "establishment war hawks" with a "senseless thirst for more foreign entanglements."
New York CNN Business —With grocery prices soaring, consumers are changing the way they shop for food. “Inflation is hitting everyone.”More consumers are additionally switching over to store brands, also called “private label,” which are often comparable in quality and lower in price. “I don’t think you can underestimate the strength of all these private label offerings,” said Heather Lalley, editor in chief of Winsight Grocery Business, a trade publication. “Now we’re seeing other retailers trying to emulate them.”In September, for example, Kroger (KR) announced a new budget private label brand called Smartway, which consolidates some of its other private label brands under one umbrella. Al Drago / Bloomberg via Getty ImagesAll told, 23 of those false electors hold positions of power within their Republican parties. Then there are additional actors that didn’t serve in the slate of false electors themselves but were instrumental in the scheme. Others hold positions of power within the state GOP, including Shafer, who is chair; Joseph Brannan, state GOP treasurer; Vikki Consiglio, the state party’s assistant treasurer; and Ken Carroll, the assistant secretary. On June 21, federal agents scattered across key states to deliver subpoenas to those who acted as Trump electors.
